Lake Kariba is a place of wondrous beauty and tranquility, a jewel of an inland
sea more than 5000 sq. km in extent, studded with islands and nestling in amongst
mountains. Of the forests which fringe the shores, the most intriguing is found at
Matusadona. |

Once on dry land, thousands of teak trees were half submerged in water as the
lake was flooded and today fascinating skeletal branches jut into the sky from
another world.
The town of Kariba is built on seven hills. The summit offers a spectacular
panorama of the lake, the dam wall and the gorge. The prolific wildlife on the
banks is a sight to behold - elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, leopard, zebra,
antelope and a host of smaller game. The famous tiger fish are a match for any
angler. Birdlife is spectacular including species like goliath heron, great
white egrets, fish eagle and openbill storks. |
